Kyiv, August 20, 2026 — Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight, killing at least 14 people and injuring more than 40, Ukrainian officials said Thursday. Some reports put the death toll as high as 16.
Scale of the Attack
Ukraine’s air force said Russia fired dozens of missiles alongside 168 Shahed-type attack drones, along with Gerbera and Parody decoy drones and other unmanned systems. The ballistic component included Oniks, Zircon, Iskander-M, and S-400 missiles launched from Russia’s Kursk, Rostov, and Bryansk regions. The air force did not disclose the total number of ballistic missiles fired.
Russia also launched 36 Kh-101, Iskander-K, and Kh-59 cruise and aviation missiles from the Vologda, Kursk, and Belgorod regions, along with eight Kalibr cruise missiles from the Novorossiysk area and two Banderol loitering munitions, according to the Ukrainian air force.
As of 9:30 a.m. local time, Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 31 cruise missiles, all eight Kalibr missiles, both loitering munitions, and 145 of the drones, the air force said. Ukraine’s air force separately said close to 90% of the drones and most of the cruise missiles were intercepted overall.
The main direction of the attack was Kyiv Oblast, with strikes and debris recorded at 28 locations across the country, according to the air force.
Casualties and Damage
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the upper floors of a nine-story residential building were destroyed in the capital’s Solomianskyi district, where most of the deaths in the city occurred. Klitschko also reported damage in the Sviatoshynskyi and Darnytskyi districts, including fires at warehouses and residential buildings, and called for Friday to be observed as a day of mourning.
Explosions were reported across the city through the night, with air raid warnings remaining in effect until after dawn. A hospital, a school, and railway infrastructure were among the sites struck, according to Ukrainian officials.
Statements From Officials
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine’s allies had failed to sufficiently replenish the country’s stock of air defense interceptors, calling on partners to provide more Patriot missiles. He said Ukraine is developing additional air-defense capabilities through a program called FREYJA, and that Patriot interceptors have not yet been replaced despite being needed daily. Zelensky thanked rescuers, doctors, police officers, and utility workers responding to the attack’s aftermath.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the overnight strikes targeted military-industrial enterprises, a transport and logistics hub, and warehouses in Kyiv and the surrounding region. The ministry also said Russian air defenses shot down at least 726 Ukrainian drones overnight over 18 Russian regions, annexed Crimea, and the Black and Azov seas. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in Russia from that count.
Context
Russian forces have intensified ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv in recent months, according to Ukrainian and Western officials, as Ukraine’s stockpile of U.S.-made Patriot interceptors — the only weapon in its arsenal capable of shooting down ballistic missiles — has run low. International stockpiles of Patriot interceptors have also been strained amid the war involving Iran and Ukraine’s more than four-year war with Russia.
